Description

MTA Arts & Design’s Percent for Art program oversees one of the largest and most diverse collections of site-specific public art in the world, with more than 300 permanent artworks by world famous, mid-career, and emerging local artists installed across subway and commuter rail stations. [break] Open House New York and MTA Arts & Design invite you to tour the newly renovated and reimagined elevated stations in Astoria Queens that have been transformed with new art, design, and structural upgrades including the enhancing of signage and entrances that are clearer and more informative for customers. Participants will explore elements of the MTA’s station enhancements and view new integrated laminated glass artwork by prominent contemporary artists, commissioned by MTA Arts & Design. The subway tour includes stops at 30th Ave station with art by Stephen Westfall, Broadway station with art by Diane Carr, 36th Ave station with art by Maureen McQuillan, and 39 Av station with art by Sarah Morris. [break] This tour will be led by Yaling Chen, Deputy Director, MTA Arts & Design.

This program is part of The Moving City: Transportation Infrastructures of New York, a year-long series of tours, conversations and debates about the future of transportation and mobility in New York City. Major support has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and matching gifts from our 2019 Spring Benefit donation challenge supporters.
